Finding Sanctuary update the Dive Centre......Septembers club night saw some 30 members come to hear how Fidning sanctuary were progressing in their efforts to gain data to try to create some proposals for Marine Protected areas in the South West. "Finding Sanctuary is a partnership project which aims to secure a healthy and productive future for the coasts and seas of South West England. Over four years, the project will work with stakeholders to design a network of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). The goal of the MPA network is to safeguard our region’s undersea habitats and marine life, and to help ensure the long-term sustainability of marine resources in the region."
For the project to suceed all marine users whether they be Fishermen, anglers, sailers, Divers or any other users of the coastal marine environment need to inform the group of their usage patterns around the coast. The presentation on Tuesday was the launch point to divers of the new website feature that allows users to log on to Finding Sanctuary and access an interactive chart of the region and plot their data! The project is linked into the Governments plans for the Marine Bill which should be finalised in November 2009 and as such Divers as a group need to ensure our thoughts and representations are heard, as do other users, if not the final proposals for a variety of levels of protection wont fully represent our usage!
